Last night marked the season finale of CBS’ hit reality show; ‘Big Brother’. It’s hard for any show, let alone a reality show to stay fresh, unique and interesting after sixteen seasons on the air, but ‘Big Brother’ definitely didn’t have to worry about that this year!
The stage was set for the final three, and final competitions of the summer. In a three-part HOH competition, we would find out all in one night who the later evicted house guest would, who would make it to the final two, and most importantly; who would be crowned winner of ‘Big Brother 16’.
The first part of the final HOH competition saw Victoria, Cody and Derrick on a simulated paragliding adventure. The premise was simple, last person standing wins the first part of the final and most crucial HOH of the summer. Of course Victoria was the first to drop. However she kind of impressed us (we know, sounds weird) but she was able to stay hanging on for over 40 minutes. We thought she’d be long gone minutes after the competition started. With Derrick and Cody left hanging on, viewers at home got to flashback to a conversation between the two 24 hours earlier. The plan was for Cody to win the first HOH competition with him automatically securing his spot in the third and final HOH of the summer. “The Hitmen” carried on with their plan, with Derrick dropping, he would move onto the second part of the HOH competition against Victoria to battle it out and see who would face Cody at the end.
The second part of the HOH competition saw Derrick go up against Victoria in a both a physical and mental competition. The two had to scale a wall all the while trying to remember the order of which the houseguests were evicted. When the houseguest felt they had placed all their huge cardboard faces in order, they would need to scale down the wall and hit the buzzer. The houseguest that completed the task in the shortest amount of time would move onto the third and final competition of the summer. Derrick completed the task in just over 15 minutes. Victoria didn’t fare too well (big shock) as her time was double – hitting just over 30 minutes. The stage was set for the third and last HOH battle of the summer.
The final competition was all mental and the premise had been a successful one in years past. Host Julie Chen, would read statements made by members of the jury. Derrick and Cody would have to answer in which comment they believed the houseguest made. This was a close one, with both men tying up more than once. In the end, Cody would win and have the sole power to decide who would take with him to the finals. This could have went either way, with many people believing he would pick Victoria (as it would almost be a lock for him to win the $500,000 grand prize). However, staying true to his ally and fellow Hitmen alliance member, Cody kept his word, evicting Victoria out of the house, with her filling the final jury member seat.
Within the finale we saw ‘Big Brother’ Alumni Dr.Will make an appearance and chat with the members of the jury as to who they think deserved to win, who played a better game, and who they would crown as the winner of ‘Big Brother 16’. Many houseguests believed Derrick played the better game, being the puppet master and manipulating everyone in the house. Other members of the jury believed Cody played a better game in keeping under the radar at the beginning and winning competitions when he needed to.
Once all the votes were locked in, Julie was joined on stage with the members of the jury as well as the first set of houseguests evicted that have been watching at home. Here, Julie spilt the beans to all the twists and surprises which happened throughout the summer. Including, ‘Team America’ as well as Derrick’s actual profession as no one in the house knew he was a cop. Shortly thereafter it was time to crown the winner of ‘Big Brother 16’ and by a vote of 7-2, Derrick won – with never being on the block the entire season! Extremely impressive!
Before the night was over, there was another prize to hand out and that was ‘America’s Favourite Houseguest’. The top three vote getter(s) were Nicole, Donny and Zack with over 10 million votes cast – the most ever in history! When it was all said and done, America voted for Donny and the and the soft-spoken groundskeeper was $25,000 richer.
Overall the finale was entertaining in true ‘Big Brother’ fashion. At times, some segments seemed rush (it is a live show after all) but we would have loved to see the segment with Dr.Will questioning the jury as to who they wanted to win go a bit longer. Also, we would have loved to see the questions asked to the final two from members of the jury be a tad bit more drama-filled. Regardless, ‘Big Brother 16’ was a massive hit for CBS which saw their ratings jump this season. Plus, CBS confirmed ‘Big Brother’ has been picked up for two more seasons. That’s right, there will be a ‘Big Brother 17’ and ‘Big Brother 18’! We were ecstatic about the news and can’t wait for another summer of secrets and twists!
