GoldenGlobesMainWhen it was officially announced last year that Tina Fey and Amy Poehler would be back hosting the 2014 Golden Globe Awards, we were extremely happy! Why you ask? Well, if you watched last night’s awards show, it’s pretty self-explanatory. If you missed out on the show,  first off, a) you’ll be left out of all the water cooler work talk  b) it was a perfect example of how awards shows should be hosted and c) don’t worry, we got your complete recap/review!

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler came out with guns blazing! Their opening monologue had us in stitches. Our mouths hurt from laughing so hard. Tina and Amy spoke about the films and actors nominated tonight and gave the viewers some “insight” on them, incase you were unaware of the actor/actress, movie or show nominated. Of course, they did this in true Tina and Amy fashion, lovingly mocking those which were nominated.

A perfect example of this was Tina and Amy mentioning Julia Louis Dreyfus, noting that she was nominated for her role in HBO’s ‘Veep’ and her movie ‘Enough Said’ for sitting in the movie section of the ballroom, instead of the TV section with her “own kind”. However, Julia couldn’t be bothered, even as Reese Witherspoon grabbed her phone for a “selfie”. This hilarious moment kicked the show into comedic high gear and the duo never looked back.  The two comedians/actresses were easily the highlight of the night, most of the memorable moments came from the two funny-women, but there were also some moments that were memorable, without the need of a comedic joke or punch line. Case and point; Amy Poehler finally winning an award for her role on ‘Parks and Recreation’. The highlight of the night for us is two-fold and involves the same person; former ‘SNL’ regular Andy Samberg. For those of you who may not have known, Andy stars in and produces his own comedy ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’ which airs on FOX, Tuesday nights at 8:30PM EST. The show is our favourite of the new TV line-up, so much in fact, that we wrote as to why it is TV’s hottest new comedy. Samberg won a Golden Globe for ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’ and took home the award for “Best Actor in a TV Comedy or Musical” beating out Michael J.Fox, Jason Bateman, Don Cheadle , and Jim Parsons. We thought it couldn’t get any better than that, but we were wrong as ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’ shocked many and took home the Golden Globe for “Best Television Comedy or Musical” beating out shows such as ‘Modern Family’, ‘Parks and Recreation’, ‘Girls’ and ‘The Big Bang Theory’. The show is incredibly funny and deserves all the acclaim it deserves! Read about it here, and for the love of God, do yourself a favour and start watching immediately!

The best part about the Golden Globes is watching celebrities maneuver around the maze of tables and chairs to try to get to the stage to accept their award and make a speech. After years of being on the air, you think the show would make it a little bit easier for the actors/actresses to get to the stage. However, with alcohol in their systems, it is nothing short but entertaining to watch this game go down. Speaking of alcohol, there were quit a bit of interesting and awkward speeches, but the one that takes the cake was from actress Jacqueline Bisset. Many on social media outlets believed she was either intoxicated or under the influence of some sort of drugs – yes it was THAT awkward to watch.

As we mentioned previously, as much as the show was about movies, TV shows and actors/actresses being honoured for their craft, the night belonged to Tina and Amy. The opening monologue saw Tina and Amy discussing movies which were nominated in their respective categories. When describing gravity, Tina Fey said: “It’s the story of how George Clooney would rather float away into space and die then spend time with a woman his own age”.   However, the line of the night which got the biggest reaction from the crowd was Tina Fey introducing Leonardo DiCaprio. The intro went something like this: “Like a supermodels vagina, please give a warm welcome to Leonardo DiCaprio”. We can talk about the perfect hosting duo this entire post (not like we haven’t already) but great moments from the show saw Elisabeth Moss winning for her role in “Top of the Lake”, Jared Leto and Matthew McConaughey winning for their roles in “Dallas Buyers Club”.

The three-hour show sped by, which just goes to show, if you have the right hosts, making the audience laugh, keep it loose, fun and fresh, the production will be a success. Here’s to Tina and Amy hosting next year as well! They’ll make history for hosting three years in a row and quite frankly, will breathe life into what can sometimes be a dull ceremony.
