American Music Awards

The 2013 American Music Awards aired last night on ABC and CTV in Canada, and for an awards show that is in all reality, a popularity contest, the performances one over the night – hands down. The winners of every award handed out last night was determined by the public, as fans went to Twitter to cast their votes and decide who they wanted to see walk away with an AMA award.

Sure some categories and nominees in each category were a little odd, and speaking about the popularity contest feel of this show, many (if not all) categories saw only three nominees in each. Call us crazy, but something just doesn’t seem right in regards to that. Regardless, the AMA’s are one of the most watched awards shows of the year. Why you ask? Well, it’s quite simple. The list of performers was long and they came to play. Every performer actually sang their songs (with possibly the exception of TLC, but who could blame them?). Since fans voted for their favourite acts on Twitter, it wasn’t a surprise seeing all the comments throughout the show – with many fans talking about the performances. We have to remember, the AMA’s were created by ‘American Bandstand’ creator and legend Dick Clark. Artists would go on bandstand to prove themselves and show the world they could sing. Last night’s awards show was no different, as many acts left us speechless. Katy Perry opened the show with a new asian-styled rendition (Geisha and all) of “Unconditionally”. Many are calling her performance racist. We thought it was visually stunning. Watch the click below and let us know what you think.

Other performances that brought the house down and heated up the TV screens were One Direction (yes, we’ll admit it – the guys got a standing ovation for crying out loud), Jennifer Lopez, Imagine Dragons, Justin Timberlake, Lady Gaga and R.Kelly and of course the artist people can’t just get enough of . . . Miley Cyrus. Miley closed the show with her hit “Wrecking Ball” that saw a big virtual kitten on the screen behind her, looking as if it were floating in space, singing the song with her, and at one point also cried. yes cried. It’s easy to say, Miley was the talk of the show with the somewhat bizarre/amazing performance. If you’ve been living under a rock and haven’t seen the performance, here it is, in all it’s glory:

The biggest winner of the night was Taylor Swift, taking home four awards; including the award of the night – Artist of the Year. Justin Timberlake was also a big winner, receiving three awards. Here’s the complete list of winners from the 2013 American Music Awards:
