Cristina Yang - Grey's

Sandra Oh has been a staple of the medical drama ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ since the premiere episode and has been a fan favourite of many viewers. Sandro Oh portrays Dr. Cristina Yang; the über competitive doctor, with the feisty attitude that fans have grown to know and love. However, that will change after the upcoming tenth season, as the actress has confirmed that she will be leaving the hit ABC medical drama.

The decision was not an easy one to make for Sandra Oh, and has thought about it for quite some time now. She let The Hollywood Reporter in on the news of her soon to be exit in an exclusive interview, stating: “Creatively, I really feel like I gave it my all, and I feel ready to let her go,” an emotional Oh tells THR. “It’s such an interesting thing to play a character for so long and to actually get the sense that she wants to be let go as well. [Cristina] wants to be let go, and I am ready to let her go. We have to start the process, story-wise, for the Grey’s writers to think of why she’s going to go.”

The decision wasn’t one that came lightly for the actress. She was actually thinking about wrapping up the character when she signed a new two-year contract back in May 2012, which will take her to the upcoming tenth season. Oh tells THR: “I’ve gone through a lot of therapy over this,” she says through tears. “I started thinking about it because I had to prepare myself. I gave myself two years to emotionally let go. At the end of last season, Shonda took me aside and said, ‘What are your thoughts?’ I said, ‘I’m ready.'” The actress let the cast and crew  in on the news last week when the show had its 200th episode table read.

Just as in real life, people come and go in our everyday lives and this is no different. For those thinking that this may ruin the future of ‘Grey’s Anatomy’, you shouldn’t be so quick to judge. Remember, ‘ER’ was a mainstay on NBC for 15 years and was a big ratings juggernaut for the network even years after big stars such as George Clooney and Julianna Margulies decided to leave. However, Sandra Oh doesn’t want this to be a sad milestone. She tells THR; “I want this to be a celebration,” Oh says of Cristina’s final run. “I want us to get to that point where we see this character ride off into the sunset. Letting go of such a huge part of my life … I want to cry right now. Grey’s has been the most important role of my life. Playing Cristina and growing her and growing myself in her, I want to usher her into the next section of her life in the best way possible. It’s got to be Cristina Yang’s happily ever after.”

There have many memorable TV characters that have come into our lives via our televisions and have truly made a long-lasting impression, and Dr. Cristina Yang portrayed by Sandra Oh is definitely one of them. As fans of the show since day one, we say thank you Sandra for bringing such a competitive, sarcastic, driven and funny character into our lives.
