Get Ready to ‘SCREAM’!

The timeless and comfortable sound of a phone ringing is anything but that, thanks to suspense master Wes Craven and the Scream franchise. When Scream first hit theatres across North America and the world in 1996, no one thought it would see a sequel, let alone become part of a trilogy. However, Wes Craven proved critics wrong by creating a horror film that was hip, clever and most importantly, scary!

This coming April 2011, the Scream franchise will be revived for the first time since 2000! Scream 4 will see the return of favourites: David and Courtney Arquette along with Neve Campbell (as they were the only three surviving members of the movie trilogy). Alongside these heavy hitters, are fresh up and coming Hollywood actors (some have been around for a while now) including; Emma Roberts, Hayden Panettiere, Adam Brody, Rory Culkin, Anna Paquin (“True Blood”) and Kristen Bell (“Forgetting Sarah Marshall”) just to name a few.

The premise for Scream 4 is simple. Students are shooting a documentary style video, revisiting the Woodsboro murders on its 10-year anniversary.  Soon, bodies begin to pile up as Sydney Prescott (Neve Campbell) returns to the city she has desperately tried to leave behind – on more than one occasion. Wes Craven is a brilliant director and knows that keeping the premise of the movie simple, will please Scream fans and the casual, new viewers of the film, because let’s face it, a lot of people that will end up going to watch the movie will be teenagers that weren’t even around when the first Scream movie hit theatres in 1996.

One big question that still remains to be answered is, who will be killed off in the movie’s opening sequence? Scream became known for that. When the first instalment came out, moviegoers were shocked when Drew Barrymore was killed off within the first 10 minutes of the movie. Many thought she would have a significant lead role in the film. With this being Craven’s first Scream film in 10 years, we think the opening sequence will be bigger and better than ever. How so, you ask? We believe there will be two victims of the ghost face killer instead of just one. So, who will have the honorary duty? We believe it will be Anna Paquin and Kristen Bell. Remember, new decade. New rules.

With too many production studios turning out horrible remake after horrible remake, Wes Craven did the smart thing by re-visiting the Scream franchise and injecting a youthful cast, which in return, might even see sequels to this fourth instalment. Regardless, Scream 4 will provide a much-needed boost to the horror genre. Remember, a horror movie doesn’t have to be all gore and guts. Wes Cravens philosophy of being hip, clever and scary has worked for three Scream films, and we have no doubt in our minds it will do so, yet again.
